A strong, plain weave cotton cloth made on hand looms in the Madras Presidency. Printed with blue spots. Usually made in warp stripes. Indian cotton yarn is used, about 16's. -

5 Foulard
The real foulard is a light weight all-silk 2 & 2 twill fabric, printed with blue or black spots on a white ground. Cotton foulards to imitate the silk kind are made from super quality yarns and printed in similar styles; usually plain weave. Standard qualities are: - Silk, 120 ends and 140 picks per inch, 40 denier warp, 90 denier weft. Cotton, 112 ends and 128 picks per inch, 140's T., 140's W. A warp satin cloth is also sold as a foulard, but in finer quality, viz., 148 ends and 72 picks per inch, 60's T., 60's W., and 186 ends and 90 picks per inch, 50's T., 60's W., all Egyptian cotton yarns, and printed in blue discharge designs. -
6 Mushroo
An East Indian cotton back silk satin, figured with white or gold flowers, some having wavy stripes of yellow, blue or other colours. It is a warp face cloth, stiffened with quince juice to give a glossy face, and made in pieces 18-in. to 30-in. wide and 4 yards to 5 yards long. The bright coloured designs include warp stripes of great variety, small diamond spots, and warp painted effects arranged to form zigzag stripes across the piece. The weft is single cotton. Made about 72 ends and 72 picks per inch, 70 denier silk warp and 40's cotton weft (up to 80's at times). The Soft is a variety of this cloth but all cotton. -
7 Mushru

8 Galateas
Coloured stripe drills, the warp being all coloured yam. Most galateas are made with the 3-shaft twill weave, though the 4-shaft twill weave has been used, as well as dobby spots. Many qualities are made. A good sample is 27-in., 98 ends and 72 picks per inch, 24's T., 16's W. The colours are fast to washing, since the cloth is used for skirtings, boys' suits, nurse's iniforms, etc. Red, white and blue are the principal colours in use, although brown, drab and black are seen in some ranges. The cloth is similar to a denim, but lighter make. -
9 Kasuri
A Japanese hand-woven cotton fabric having irregular white checks on a blue ground. It is made plain weave. The yarn is tied up at certain intervals with a string before dyeing, and these places being untouched by the dye form white spots. The cloth is mostly used for the clothing of school children.
